Workshop
Description
This 6-week workshop is an extension of Introduction to Web Design.
Each student will be building and posting their own web site based on a
specific hobby or interest. This hands-on approach will be supplemented
with lectures, demonstrations and individual instruction. Emphasis will
be placed on visual design and information architecture. Applications used
include Dreamweaver, Fireworks and FrontPage. This is the second of a three-part
series on web design.
Prerequisites
Introduction to Web Design.
Course Objectives
1. Learn how to structure a web site
2. Consider various approaches to interface and navigation design.
3. Explore visual communication through use of color, composition, scale,
typography and other design elements.
4. Gain proficiency using several web design programs including Dreamweaver,
Fireworks and Front Page.
5.Utilize web-safe colors, typefaces and file formats for the Web.
6. Review optimizing graphics and photographs for use on the Web.
7. Understand how to post and update a site.
8. Learn how to register and promote a web site.
Topical Outline
Week 1
Interface and Navigation Design. Discussion of web site architecture.
Asking the right questions. Defining content and goals for the site. Begin
work on web site.
Week 2
Visual Design Principles . Using visual language including color,
shape and type to communicate. Present site maps to instructor.
Week 3
Review of site maps and initial designs through instuctor led work
session.
Week 4
Navigational elements. Rollovers using Dreamweaver and Fireworks
Week 5
Creating imagemaps in Dreamweaver. Instructor led work session
Week 6
Testing, launching & editing a web site. Using FrontPage to launch a site.
